JL Stiles is a New England artist, trained in the traditional styles of classical realism and the Old Master style of painting. Nurtured by various teachers, Janan has produced award-winning portraits and fine art.
Being a classical realist painter, JL Stiles works primarily with traditional oil paint on canvas. The Old Master style of painting is evident in JL Stiles work in her still life artwork and figurative drawings.
JL Stiles currently paints from her home in rural New Hampshire. Her inspiration comes mainly from the natural beauty and peace of the wildlife sanctuary surrounding her house.
Recently her formal training has been in the classical tradition of the Boston School Painters of the 19th and 20th centuries. Studying with Paul C. Ingbretson, a present-day master of classical realism, who was a student of R.H. Ives Gammell and whose teaching lineage goes back to William Paxton, Frank Benson, Edmund Tarbell, Jean Leon Gerome, and eventually back to the 18th Century French master Jacques Louis David.
This traditional study is combined with study in the more contemporary tradition of the Impressionists in seeing, drawing, and painting truth and beauty as seen in nature. Classical Realism was originally practiced by the Old Master painters, such as Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Rembrant and many other such famous artists from the 18th century. The Old Masters were fully trained, masters of their local artists' guilds, and worked independently.
